“One Hour Wonders”
Many Christan men have become “one hour wonders”. We have all seen them, men who come to church on occasion following their wives, they usually are sporting a sour face as they make a bee-line for the coffee bar. These guys reluctantly drag themselves into the worship center and take a seat close to the back looking around to see if any of their perspective business clients may be in attendance.
When the singing begins, they stand, with coffee cup in hand of course, but they never open their mouths and actually sing. Everybody knows, only women sing in church. During the seemingly endless 25-minute sermon which they don’t understand, they pretend to read the Bible app on their phone as they mindlessly scroll though Facebook or X.
It’s so sad to see these men in their hit and miss attendance at church. They seem to think the one hour on Sunday is all that is required to maintain their fire insurance. Many of these guys are cultural Christians who treat church like a Chamber of Commerce meeting or customer recruitment event to make new a business contact. When the service is over, they bolt out of church in order to beat the Baptist to the buffet lunch at Golden Corral, or get home before the Sunday NFL game begins.
Many of these men have bought into the lie that “I can’t make a difference” They have been told it doesn’t matter if I show up, if I vote, if I go to church, if I speak up for truth. These men may just need a word of encouragement, an invite to go out for coffee, or an listening ear.
Over the past few months, I have developed a burden for these men who are casual in their worship, lackluster in their commitment, shallow in their biblical knowledge, superficial in their faith, with a paper -thin understanding of theology, they are unsure of their testimony and have little, if any, spiritual influence on their families.
These men will “buy Jesus when He’s on sale” but will choose to leave Him on the shelf whenever they think it might cost them something for the “full price Jesus.”
Shallow men with worldly dreams of money, sex and power these men are found in every church in America. They go through the motions for one hour a week on Sunday to feel like they have checked the box but all the while they are missing the joy, the power, the peace that comes from a deeper walk with Jesus.
Beginning in 2027 we will be offering a program to train these men to go deeper with Christ.
It’s called “A Deeper Walk Weekend” and is designed for men who are tired of playing games with God, tired of playing church and who what to go beyond a superficial faith. It’s for men who want more than a casual, shallow relationship with God.
